Bipolar Disease and Internet. A Real Case Story
Once upon a time in America:
It was around 2003 when I learned that my mother was skipping her monthly akineton injections. I had to take a break from my Ph.D. studies in USA and fly to hometown Turkey to help her. I have taken her to her private practice psychiatrist. The doctor recommended her to continue with the heavy monthly injections of akineton.
I have taken her to USA and arranged an appointment with a psychiatrist certified in USA. The psychiatrist asked me the name of her doctor in Turkey and told me that there were new pills balancing bipolar disease (zyprexa and equivalents) instead of heavy akineton injections and the pills are much more effective and easy to use.
This was in 2003 when gene-drug information was not that prevalent on internet and apparently the power of internet was not enough to bypass the cultural barriers among medical doctors from different cultures.
Look where we are standing now.
