GMO OR NOT GMO ?
What is genetic engineering ? Genetic engineering is basically addition or deletion of genes into an organism. A novel gene can be taken from one organism and added into another organism.
On the other hand, if there is one copy of a gene in an organism, one can add additional copies of the same gene, not altering the composition but changing the amount and the related function of that particular gene.
We all know that organic tomatoes have a unique delicious taste and scent. A scent and a taste that make us conclude that the tomato is organic and not a GMO.
However, theoretically it is also possible to make tomato smell and taste more natural than the original organism. Using genetic engineering techniques one can insert additional copies of the taste and scent genes. The end result is "the most" organic tomato with a beautiful red color and most appealing taste and smell of all times.
However, that tomato is a GMO. It contains additional copies of the natural genes.
These tomatoes will rock the organic market for sure.
I do not know a specific greedy company doing that. However, based on my 8 years of work in genetic research I know that it is theoretically possible.
Genetic engineering is a sharp knife and it all depends how you use it.
