F.D.A. Approves Gene-Based Cancer Drug
Published: Saturday, September 26, 1998

The Food and Drug Administration gave approval today to the first genetically engineered drug for the treatment of advanced breast cancer.

Among the 30 percent of breast-cancer patients whose especially aggressive tumors are fueled by a bad gene called HER2, the drug, Herceptin, substantially increases the chances of battling the cancer and living a little longer.

Herceptin's maker, Genentech, a subsidiary of Roche Holding Ltd., said it would be on pharmacy shelves next month. Patients will get weekly intravenous infusions. A price has not been made final, the company said.
