American Obesity Statistics. Is It Genetic or Economic ?
You are not what your genes are. You are what you eat. I believe that is the take home message of the image above (Source; www.calorielab.com) We can not blame genes only for obesity. There is more than 10% difference between the fattest State Mississippi (32.6% obese) and the thinnest state Colorado (19.3% obese). Culinary and sport habits explains this difference of circa10%.
Why not primarily genetic ? The overall genetic difference between African Americans, Irish Americans, Native Americans, Italian Americans are much bigger then 10% and I am sure that African Americans in Mississippi are weighing more than African Americans in Colorado on avarage.
Is economics a part of that issue ?. Richer northen states have a lower obesity index in general. It seems that the more you earn the more you eat is not correct.
