Is The Genomics Revolution Too Late to Help Freddie Mercury
Freddie Mercury was an icon of 80s and his fame lasted beyond 2000. He was not only a well known rock star but also a sound of human subconscious seeking for power. His well known phrases '' Who wants to live forever ! '', ''We are the champions ! '' and ''I want it all, I want it all, I want it now ! '' define the human nature that is running after a long, prosperous, healthy life. Freddie Mercury might be owing his fame to these strong words targeting human subconsciousness besides his musical excellency.
Advanced gene technology today is promising a longer, healthier more prosperous life. Life-expectancy is already increased in the last century and redox-based approaches are promising further increase in life span. Novel gene-diagnostic approaches are not only diagnosing the diseases earlier but also opening new avenues for treatment. Genetic engineering of organisms promise more nutrition for a cheaper price. The dream of Freddie Mercury seems to be coming true. We are going to live forever !. We want it all and we want it now ! and of course we are the champions ! for doing all these.
However, the question is that do we have to do all these because we can ? Shall we follow our subconscious for more power and want it all ?. Are we not interfering with nature ? Shall we get it all.
My wish was bio-tech cure for AIDS was there before we lost Freddie Mercury. If he was alive he could have enjoyed the life within a normal life span and within a reasonable budget. Do we really need to go beyond that ?
